The Art of Giclée Printing: Why It Matters for Your Artwork

Introduction

When investing in an art print, quality matters. A great print should not only capture the essence of the original artwork but also stand the test of time. This is where Giclée printing comes in. But what exactly makes this printing method special, and why should you choose a Giclée print over other types of reproductions? Let’s dive into the details.

What Is Giclée Printing?

Giclée (pronounced zhee-clay) is a fine art printing technique that uses high-resolution inkjet technology to produce exceptional-quality prints. The word itself comes from the French term gicler, meaning “to spray,” referencing the way pigment-based inks are applied to the paper or canvas.

Unlike traditional printing methods, Giclée prints are created with archival-quality inks on acid-free, pH-neutral materials. This ensures that the artwork maintains its depth of colour, clarity, and longevity—qualities essential for collectors and art enthusiasts alike.

A Brief History of Giclée

The concept of Giclée printing was developed in the 1980s and became widely recognised in the 1990s when printmaker Jack Duganne coined the term. Originally, digital printing was not considered suitable for fine art, but advancements in inkjet technology changed that. Today, Giclée printing is the gold standard for museum-quality art reproductions.

The Process: How a Giclée Print Is Made

Creating a Giclée print is a meticulous process that ensures every detail of the original artwork is preserved. Here’s how it works:

  1. High-Resolution Capture

The original artwork is professionally scanned or photographed in ultra-high resolution to capture every fine detail, texture, and colour variation.

  2. Colour Matching and Proofing

This stage ensures that the print matches the original artwork as closely as possible. Minor adjustments may be made to refine colour accuracy and sharpness. Proofing is a vital part of the process, as it guarantees the final print meets the artist’s standards before multiple copies are produced.

  3. Archival-Quality Printing

Using advanced inkjet printers—such as Epson models with Ultrachrome HDX archival inks—the image is printed onto high-quality fine art paper or canvas. The paper I use meets Giclée classification standards, with most exceeding 300 gsm for durability and richness. The inks used in Giclée printing are pigment-based rather than dye-based, ensuring superior longevity and resistance to fading.

Why Choose a Giclée Print?

If you’re considering purchasing a print, here’s why a Giclée print stands above the rest:

  • Exceptional Detail – Captures the finest details of brushwork, texture, and colour.

  • Rich, Vibrant Colours – Pigmented inks provide depth and accuracy that dye-based inks cannot achieve.

  • Archival Longevity – Giclée prints last over 100 years without fading when properly cared for.

  • Museum-Quality – The same printing method used by major galleries and institutions worldwide.

  • Investment Value – Since Giclée prints are produced with longevity and precision in mind, they hold more value compared to standard prints. Many collectors and art enthusiasts prefer Giclée prints because they remain in pristine condition for decades.

Custom Print Requests & Proofing

If you see an original artwork that is not currently available as a print but would love to own a reproduction, get in touch. I can discuss the proofing process, where we work together to ensure the best possible print result. Proofing takes time and attention to detail, ensuring that the colours, textures, and overall composition remain as true to the original as possible.

A deposit is required for proofing, ensuring a serious commitment, but I am happy to chat and guide you through the process. If the proof meets your expectations, the print can then be finalised and shipped to you.
