Everything & Nothing
Created during Chapter 2 (2020 - 2023), this piece is part of the Versions of Robert Collection—a deeply personal body of work reflecting my journey through my mother’s stroke, dissociation, and eventual dementia. This period of my life involved immense inner soul work, with each piece acting as a page in a diary, accompanied by a poem or story.
This artwork reflects on privilege, perception, and the weight of inherited realities.
The silver spoon—a symbol deeply ingrained in societal consciousness—becomes both an object of inheritance and a battlefield of self-identity in this piece. It challenges the narratives we are born into, questioning whether privilege is a blessing or a burden, and how history, education, and societal expectations shape the journey of an individual.
Throughout the composition, embedded words tell a deeper story of social constructs, inherited expectations, and the battle of reality versus perception:
• “Privilege and the Western World” / “Modern World” – A commentary on societal structures and access.
• “How will I show myself?” – A confrontation with self-perception in a world of pre-determined labels.
• “Culture / Habits / Education / Money” – The pillars that define opportunity and struggle.
• “Hostility” – The tension between those who benefit from privilege and those who fight against its constraints.
• “Direction” – The uncertainty of navigating personal identity in a world dictated by external narratives.
The elongated silver spoon, stretching across the composition, is both a symbol and a weight—a tool of nourishment or a reminder of societal expectations. Figures emerge, abstracted and intertwined within the strokes, suggesting intergenerational struggles, silent voices, and the ongoing battle to break free from inherited norms.
This artwork does not simply depict privilege—it questions it. What does privilege mean if we cannot define ourselves beyond it? How do we shape our own evolution outside of the ghosts of history?
