Description:
Created during Chapter 2 (2020 - 2023), this piece is part of the Versions of Robert Collection—a deeply personal body of work reflecting my journey through my mother’s stroke, dissociation, and eventual dementia. This period of my life involved immense inner soul work, each piece acting as a page in a diary, often accompanied by a poem or story.
“Two Spirits Talking” is a conversation beyond words—a reflection, a confrontation, an observation. The figures emerge like ghosts of the past and present, suspended in time, discussing cycles of fear, control, and belief. The painting invites the viewer to see what they feel, to question whether they are witnessing humans, birds, or spirits.
This artwork explores the tension between repetition and transformation—how we, as humans, breathe in inherited beliefs, continue known patterns, and sometimes trap each other in our own perceptions. The two spirits linger in this dialogue, questioning whether mankind will ever move beyond the island of the outer soul to embrace the sun and moon of the inner soul.
A moment of reflection—are we bound by our words, or can we learn to listen beyond them?
