Description:
Created during Chapter 2 (2020 - 2023), this piece is part of the Versions of Robert Collection—a deeply personal body of work reflecting my journey through my mother’s stroke, dissociation, and eventual dementia. This period of my life involved immense inner soul work, each piece acting as a page in a diary, often accompanied by a poem or story.
In “The Story of Two Lovers,” we see two figures—aged, wise, and deeply connected. There is love, history, and time woven into their forms. They stand in contrast yet harmony, mirroring the delicate balance of long-standing love. Their vibrant colours suggest energy, passion, and a life richly lived. They are two, yet one.
Each brushstroke tells a story:
• One lover, caught in the light of spring, radiating warmth, passion, and a longing to feel alive again.
• The other, lost in the regret of time, weighed down by the past, yet still yearning for connection.
• Between them, a distance—a silence that holds their fears, their unspoken words, their deep desire to return to each other.
Their love is not just romance; it is a journey of returning to themselves. Love does not exist in perfection but in the way two souls choose to see one another, to hold space, and to let go of the fears that keep them apart.
This artwork is a meditation on love, time, and self-discovery. It speaks to the silent spaces between two people—the things left unsaid, the longing to return, and the courage it takes to see each other fully. A lifetime of love is not without struggle, but within that struggle lies the beauty of connection, of choosing each other over and over again.

by Robert Paul:
Story of Two Lovers
..
One lover
caught in the light of spring
The other lost
in the regret of time
..
Waiting
wanting
for that feeling
to be alive
..
Scared
in their unknown
fighting
for a way back
..
They fall
looking at each other
what will they see
how will they stop the hold on their hearts
..
The gates are open
can they understand the silence of their judgements
will they stop their fears from colliding
..
Damaged
& standing
in that moment
Together
and alone
held by the power of their hearts
..
The two lovers begin
the journey
of returning to themselves
..
